The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
