In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
